￼Surgeon Panteleimon Paneris attended the English speaking department of Medicine at Semmelweiss University medical school in Budapest and graduated with honours. He special- ized in general surgery at “EVANGELISMOS“ hospital and continued to work as a specialising surgeon for a year. Under the guidance of Professor G. Melotti at the surgical clinic of the S. Agostino-Estense hospital, in Modena, he has attended the work on advanced laparoscopic surgery. Subsequently, he worked as a surgeon in the surgical clinic of “PATISION“ Hospital where he was trained in endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases by conducting gastroscopy and colonoscopy. He participates in the surgical clinic of “HENRY DUNANT“ hospital as a member of the surgical team under the direction of Dr Ilias Kafetzis undertaking a wide range of interventions of classical, laparoscopic surgeries and other minimally invasive techniques.
LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY AND MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES
Modern technology has contributed significantly to the evolution of surgery through the development of tools and technologies that contribute to reducing traumas, minimizing pain without jeopardising the therapeutic effect. Laparoscopic surgery is the result of this advancement. It is a minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions (0.5 to 2 cm) for the surgical treatment of patient–s diseases. In particular, a special camera called a laparoscope is inserted in the belly through a 1 cm incision, through which an image of high resolution, zoom, with great detail and sharpness is being transmitted. Through other small incisions the appropriate tools for the realisation of the surgical procedure are imported. Compared to the open surgery the advantages of the laparoscopic surgery are: less postoperative pain, minimal chances of hemorrhage and post-operative hernias, better aesthetic result, faster mobility of the patient, shorter postoperative recovery and shorter hospitalisation. With a laparoscopic surgery nearly all the open surgery operations can be performed. It has become, undoubtedly, the ideal method for the treatment of: cholelithiasis, acute appendicitis, gynecological diseases, hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux, obesity, adrenal disease, colon and stomach cancer, inguinal and umbilical hernia, postoperative hernia and other disorders tra- ditionally treated with the open method. Laparoscopic surgery has contributed towards the realization of bloodless surgery by minimizing the need for transfusions. This is particularly important, as transfusions have been implicated in the transmission of diseases, allergic reactions, while relevant studies have highlighted the negative correlation of blood transfusion with survival after surgical treatment of cancer. Minimally invasive surgery could also apply for the excision of hemorrhoids and Anorectal fistulas. The use of Endoanal Doppler ultrasound aims at the selective ligation of the vessels bleeding the Haemorrhoidal nodules with stitches or laser, achieving the successful bloodless treatment of the disease and with minimal postoperative discomfort. The use of a special endoscope of VAAFT method in treating Anorectal fistulas achieves the selective destruction of fistula pus minimizing complications such as severe postoperative pain, bleeding and damage of sphincter mechanism. Anorectal fistulas can also be treated by using a special laser catheter.
