Dr. Moustardas studied Medicine in the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and conducted his PhD thesis in the Surgical Department of the Medical School of the University of Athens, Greece.
He has specialized in General Surgery (“LAIKO” Hospital, Athens 1982), in Thoracic Surgery (“EVAGGELISMOS” Hospital, Athens 1992) and in Vascular Surgery (“LAIKO” Hospital, Athens 1993).
He has been educated in Endovascular Surgery in the European Vascular Masterclass (Amsterdam, NL) and in the use of LASER for the treatment of varices (Avelana Vein Center, SI).
Having served in the Greek National Healthcare System from 1982 to 2011, he has worked as Consultant Surgeon and Deputy Head of the Surgical Department at the General Hospital of Chania, as Consultant Surgeon of the Thoracic- Vascular Surgery Department at “EVAGGELISMOS” Hospital in Athens, as Consultant Surgeon and Deputy Head of the Thoracic Surgery Department at the General Hospital “AGIOS PANTELEIMON” in Nikaia-Pireaus, as Deputy Head of the University Vascular Surgery Department at “LAIKO” Hospital in Athens and as Coordinating Director of the Thoracic-Vascular Surgery Department at the General Hospital of Chania “O AGIOS GEORGIOS”.
He is a full member in a number of Greek and International Surgical Societies, he has published in several surgical journals and is regularly attending Greek and International vascular surgery conferences.
Today, he works as Chief of the Vascular Surgery department of “IASIS” Hospital, Chania
ENDOVASCULAR TREATMENT OF VASCULAR DISEASES (EVAR - TEVAR)
Minimally invasive endovascular repair of aneurysms of the Abdominal Aorta, iliac arteries (EVAR) and the Thoracic Aorta (TEVAR)
Aneurysms of the arteries are local bulges of the vessel walls. They are life threatening conditions, as they are often asymptomatic, and thus remain undiagnosed, while their sudden rupture leads to internal bleeding with great mortality.
In order to treat the large artery aneurysms, we place special grafts (stent grafts) which prevent further dilatation of the vessel wall. In this way, when needed, we can exclude the aneurysms of the abdominal and iliac arteries (EVAR) and the thoracic, mainly the descending, aorta (TEVAR). This procedure is realized with the initial placement of specialized wires and catheters, under local or regional anesthesia, with small incisions in the thighs (groin) or even percutaneously. By help of these wires and catheters we introduce and place the endografts, either in the Operating Room with a C-ARM machine, or ideally in a special operating room (vascular surgery suite).
With this minimally invasive technique, we can now treat patients with aneurysms, who would, otherwise, need a more severe procedure, under general anesthesia and possibly need admission in an intensive care unit.
With endovascular methods, we can also provide solutions in most cases of vascular conditions, such as artery stenoses or occlusions (balloon angioplasty with or without stent placement), or even limb varicose veins with laser (laser ablation) or other intravenous procedures. Patients receive a much easier treatment, without major burden in the body, and usually can return to their daily activities immediately or in a few days after the operation.
