Dr Leonidas Mamas was born in Karystos, Evia, where he completed his circular studies. He studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, graduating in 1971. He served in the Navy(Naval Hospital of Athens). He specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Maternity Hospital ‘Marika Heliadi’(Elena), from where he was granted the title of specialty in 1978. There, he remained as a SpecialisedAssistant till 1981 and as a Curator from 1983 until 1986. During 1981 and 1982, he worked in ‘Hammersmith Hospital of London’ engaging himself in surgical laser surgery and reproduction. Moreover, he wrote his Doctoral Thesis at the Head of Epidemiology of the University of Athens under the Professor Mr D.Trichopoulos and was subsequently proclaimed to the title of ‘Doctor’ in 1985.
Since 1986, he has been practicing Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Private Sector. He has concerned himself with Vitro Fertilisation(IVF) from 1986 in the primal centres that were first set forth in Greece. He has been a Head of the Sperm Laboratory at the Private Maternity Clinic ‘Mitera’, during the period of 1993-1996 and from 1999 till today a Director of the IVF Centre ‘NEOGENESIS’. Throughout his commendable action in the field of Obstetrics-Gynaecology and Assisted Reproduction, Mr Mamas has published a significant number of papers in Greek and foreign periodicals as well as chapters in foreign books. A remarkable piece of Mr Mama’s work is the creativity and implementation of an innovative insemination procedure, the ‘EndoTuboPeritoneal Insemination’(IUTPI), which is based on the use of a special speculum, in which he himself has invented and produced. This product is available in other centres as well, both domestically and abroad. What is worth mentioning though, is his outstanding contribution to poor answers and women with high FSH during the IVF process.
Furthermore, he has held the chair of the General Secretary of the Panhellenic Association of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and a member of the Board of Directors of the Athens Medical Society. He is also a member of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology(ESHRE), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine(ASRM), and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Medical Society for Assisted Reproduction. In 1995, he was awarded the Diploma of the European Board of Gynaecology & Obstetrics –EBGO, under specific examinations and in 2003 the Ultrasonic Permit from the Ministry of Health.
