He born in Athens in 1958 and after attending Secondary Education (Model Evangelical School of Nea Smyrni), studied medicine at the University of Athens (1976-1983). He served in the Greek Army as a sergeant doctor Unit (21st squadron Media Tank, Alexandroupolis, 1983-1984).
Immediately after he specialized in Pulmonary-Tuberculosis (1984-1985 Intensive Care Unit Respiratory Distress Centre, 1985-1989 4th Respiratory Medicine Chest Diseases Hospital of Athens “Sotiria”) and then in June 1989 he was appointed as a Curator in the newly established Depart- ment of Respiratory Medicine of the General Hospital of Melissia “Amalia Fleming”. There he worked until 2000 (having the rank of Consultant from 1998) and in 2000, after decision he appointed as a Consultant in University Respiratory Clinic A ́ of Chest Diseases Hospital “SOTIRIA”. In 2005, after the necessary decision, he took the position and was appointed as Coordinator Director of the 3rd Pulmonary Clinic in Chest Diseases “Sotiria” Hospital, while organized and hosted the Scientific Management of Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre and Sleep Laboratory Study in the 3rd Pathology Department of the same hospital, where he served until November 2011, when he resigned to take up the post of Director of Pulmonary Clinic of Hospital Metropolitan, a position which he still holds. He specialized in the Respiratory function Laboratory in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (Gas analyzer) in a sleep laboratory and the management of patients with lung transplantation in a globally recognized Program in a University of Canada (1991-1992 Royal Victoria Hospital and Meakins-Christie Laboratories, University of McGill, Montreal) and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in patients with chronic lung diseases (2008, Raleigh Hospital of the University of Duke, Durham, North Carolina, USA). In 2009 he was awarded the honorary title of Visiting Professor at the School of Medicine in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Coyoacán, Mexico City). As evidenced by his education and the educational-scien- tific work, he is specialized in the following subjects of his specialty: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Bronchial asthma, Breath- ing disorders in sleep and sleep study, Respiratory Laboratory Operation, Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (Gas analyzer), Non-invasive mechan- ical ventilation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Stop smoking and Bronchoscopy. Since 1997 he is a distinguished Doctor of Medicine School of the Uni- versity of Athens on the theses of the “Daily variation in circulating levels of certain cytokines and proteins in an acute inflammatory reaction in community acquired pneumonia in adults”.
He has been elected National Delegate of Greece to the European Res- piratory Society (European Respiratory Society, ERS, 2005-2008), International Governor of the American College of Pulmonology (American Col- lege of Chest Physicians, ACCP, 2008-2012), ERS COPD Audit National Representative. He is an active member (Golden Member) of the European Respiratory Society (European Respiratory Society, ERS, 1990-pre- sent), Fellow (Fellow, FCCP) American College of Pulmonology (American College of Chest Physicians, ACCP, 1998-present) and a member of the American Thoracic Society (American Thoracic Society, ATS), and also a papers Judge in the following medical journals: “Chest”, “Respiratory Med- icine”, “Pulmonary Pharmacology” & “Therapeutics”, “Respiration”. He is also a member of McGill University Alumni Club.
He is an Elected Secretary of the Education Committee of the Greek Company Spirometry, Exercise and Rehabilitation (2013-present), Special Secretary of the Board Union of Greek pulmonologists (2013-present), an elected member of the Board the Scientific Society of Hospital Metro- politan (2013-present) and a member of the Greek Respiratory Society (from 1990). He served as a member of the Editorial Board of the medical journal “Pneumon” Greek version of the European Respiratory Journal, Chest and pulmonary newspaper Info in Respiratory Medicine. He served as Chairman of the Working Group of Greek COPD Respiratory Society (2005-2011), elected alternate member of the Board NNTHA (2005-2007), elected alternate member of the Scientific Council NNTHA (2007-2010) and Chairman of Health Committee NNTHA (2009-2010).
Regarding the scientific-research activity, Dr. Epameinondas Kosmas is the author of 39 original articles published in international medical journals and 46 articles in Greek magazines. He has co-authored three chapters in international medical books and 32 chapters in Greek medical books, monographs etc. He has presented 266 original papers in International Conferences Medical and 100 in Greek. He gave 320 lectures and has chaired 67 round tables - workshops in International and Greek Confer- ences-Seminars Symposia and other scientific events. Finally, he has re- ceived many awards for innovative work both in Greece and abroad, with this major award from the American Thoracic Society and the Na- tional Emphysema Foundation for his work “Annual rate of hospitalizations and mortality are determined by the compliance to treatment in pa- tients with COPD” (ATS International Conference, New Orleans, 2010).
